The Familiar Face of Fear: Unconscious Patterns, Shadow Work, and Lunar Wisdom

Amid the potent energy of this Scorpio full moon, I find myself feeling everything, especially my fears. Old, persistent fears are surfacing, and I’m clinging to them like a raft in an endless sea. My head bobs above the waves just long enough to catch a breath before being pulled back under again. The experience is scary, yet familiar.

What is it about this feeling that feels oddly safe?  Why, in the light of this full, awe-inspiring moon, am I invited—no, urged—to feel the very fears that have held me back?

As a somatic coach and therapist, I work with shadows every day, though that doesn’t mean I’m immune to my own. I, too, hear the voice of punishment. The voice of scarcity. The voice of “I told you so.” Sometimes it’s not even mine—it echoes through generations, a whisper from my ancestors warning me of what might go wrong.

But life is not static. It is movement, vibration, energy. My practice is rooted in meeting what arises—in feeling into the sensations rather than turning away. I’ve come to know how content the familiar can feel, even when it's painful. Sometimes, it feels safer to stay in discomfort than to let it move through us in all its raw, messy truth.

Where is it living in my body? My heart? My solar plexus? My calves? My chest?

And I stay with it. I stay with it in its messiness. I allow myself to be messy. I pay homage to the screams, the tears, the roars, the grief that demands to be seen—and I let it pass through.

And when I can’t? When I find myself stuck or it is to big for me to be with alone?

I reach out. I ask for help from mentors, therapists, friends, and Spirit.

I explore the “I can’t,” the “I won’t,” not as dead ends, but as a part of me that wants to integrate and no longer be in charge of protecting me. And if it all fails, I pray.

In my somatic lineage, we honour the shadow. We don’t bypass it. We acknowledge our rage, our fear, our negative intent—to witness and release it. We discharge, meaning we allow the energy to move out of the areas where it is being held & flow through the rest of the body. We ask our higher self to guide us back into alignment with our truth, with the universal life force. We move, we vibrate, we breathe, we heal—through body, energy, and staying connected to our longings.

I believe what we desire, we can unconsciously fear...and what we experience, we unconsciously want.

Lunar Wisdom, Body Intelligence
Lunar Wisdom, Body Intelligence

As women, when we honour the lunar cycles and move in rhythm with them, we begin to reclaim an ancient, embodied wisdom. We remember that we are not separate—we are part of a cycle that holds us, always.

When we align with cosmic timing, we tap into a rhythm greater than our own.

We realise we are not alone.

We are not limited to the confines of this 3D world.

When we turn inward, when we truly feel, the veil begins to thin.

The unseen becomes felt. Fear becomes a gateway—not a sentence.

And in that moment, even as we float in a vast open sea, we realise:

We’re not just clinging to survival.

The veil melts...

We remember how to swim—In the deep, sacred waters of the universe.
